However, before generating an e-Way Bill, the taxpayer must be registered on the e-Way Bill portal.

Who Should Register for e-Way Bill?

Since, the e-Way Bill is issued for the purpose of transporting goods/commodities of various types and sizes, therefore, this taxation system is targeted towards suppliers or transporters of goods or commodities.

Generally, e-Way Bill registration and the facility to generate e-Way Bill can be obtained by the following categories of persons:

* Registered suppliers who already have GST registration
* Transporters with GST registration
* Transporters who do not have GST registration

All registered suppliers or transporters must have a Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN) and are required to provide their GSTIN at the time of online e-Way Bill registration. Also, a phone number, preferably a mobile phone number is required in order to receive OTP (one-time-password). The supplier or transporter’s mobile number is associated with the corresponding GST number during the process of registration.

The GSTIN and mobile number of the supplier or transporter are thus, required for a successful e-Way Bill registration process.

Step-by-Step Guide on How To Register on e-Way Bill Portal

After learning a couple of important things about the e-Way Bill system, we shall now look at the step-by-step guide on how to register on the e-Way Bill portal.

The steps given are as follows:

Steps:

1. Open a web browser and go to the website/portal https://ewaybill.nic.in/. The Goods and Services Tax e-Way Bill System portal will be displayed on your screen.

Note: The e-Way Bill portal can be easily accessed using any device (such as desktop PC, laptop, tablet, and smartphone). You must connect your device to the Internet (via Ethernet/LAN, Wi-Fi, Hotspot, LTE, or mobile data).

2. On the top menu, select Registration, then click New e-Way Bill Registration to proceed with the registration process. You will be directed to the e-Way Bill Registration Form page.

3. In order to register for the e-Way Bill system, you must enter your 15-digit Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN) in the field next to Enter GSTIN and also enter the code from the given image, then click the Go button.

4. After clicking the Go button and the request is submitted, you will be redirected to the e-Way Bill Registration Form. The page will auto-populate and display the GST registration details of the supplier. Click the Send OTP button to complete the OTP authentication.

Note: Once, the OTP is authenticated, the user must provide a username that can be used for the account and set up a new password. Once the credentials (username and password) are accepted, the user can begin using the e-Way Bill portal and avail of the required services quickly.

5. Once you receive the OTP, enter the code sent via OTP in the system and click the Verify OTP button.

6. Next, provide a User ID or User Name in order to operate the newly created account on the e-Way Bill portal.

Note: The username should consist of at least 8 to 15 alpha-numeric characters and can also include special characters as well.

7. Once the request is submitted, the e-Way Bill portal will validate, if the given User ID or User Name already exists.

8. Once the e-Way Bill approves the User ID or User Name, provide a secure password.

Note: The password will need to have a minimum of 8 characters, which can include alpha-numeric and special characters. Also, the password is case-sensitive.

9. Once both User ID or User Name and secure password are validated and approved, the final registration request is submitted.

Note: Should there be an error, a pop up with the error message will appear on your screen containing information of the error message.

If all is fine, the system will create User ID or User Name and password and complete e-Way Bill registration process on the e-Way Bill portal.


e-Way Bill Registration Online for Unregistered Taxpayers
Since an unregistered taxpayer does not have a GSTIN in order to register for e-Way Bill on the portal, they will need to use an alternative method of e-Way Bill registration, that is, utilizing the business details.

The required steps for unregistered suppliers or transporters to register online for e-Way Bill are given as follows:

Step 1. Make all the business details ready and handy and just log on to https://ewaybill.nic.in/.

Step 2. On the top menu, click Registration and select the Enrolment for Transporters option.

Step 3. On clicking the option, this will display the e-Way Bill Registration Form on your screen. The form will contain certain mandatory fields, which will be marked with an asterisk symbol (*) and certain non-mandatory fields. You will be requested to fill in the following business details in the form:

1. Select Your State* (from the drop-down menu)

2. (a) Legal name (Enter Name as per PAN)*

(b) Trade name, if any

(c) PAN*

After entering the PIN, click the Validate button. You will now receive an option to fill in the remaining details on the form, which are:

3. Type of enrolment*. Options given are:
Warehouse/Depot, Godown, Cold Storage or Transport Services

4. Constitution of Business (Please select the Appropriate)*. Options available in the drop-down menu are:
Private Limited, Proprietorship, Public Limited, Foreign Company, Partnership, Unlimited, and others

5. Particulars of Principal Place of Business

6. Do you have aadhaar number of Proprietor or Main person of Company / Firm
Yes / No

If the option yes is chosen, then you need to click or tick a box authorizing the GSTN to obtain one’s details from UIDAI for the purpose of verification.

Click the Verify Detail & Send OTP button, post which an OTP will be sent to the registered mobile number.

Once the OTP is entered, click the Verify OTP button, which will complete the Aadhaar verification process.

7. Upload

* Address Proof (click the Choose File button to browse and then click Upload)

* ID Proof (click the Choose File button to browse and then click Upload)

Note: There is no specific file format or file size specified, however, either PDF or JPEG formats can be uploaded in the form.

8. Login Details (this must contain the following details):

* User Name*

* Password*

* Confirm Password*

9. Verification (you must accept the authenticity of the details provided by you on the form)

Tick the checkbox confirming that information provided by you are correct and valid, then click the Save button.

Step 4. After submitting the form, then a 15-digit Transporter ID or TRANS ID generated along with the user credentials, thus completing the process of e-Way Bill registration.

Step 5. And the transporter can give their this 15-digit Transporter ID to their clients to include in their e-Way Bill. and transporter will easily be eligible to access the same on the e-Way Bill portal and enter the vehicle number for movement of the consignment.
